A week of Hetzner's free inference in production
Last week we benchmarked Hetzner's two free Qwen models on 112 recorded searches. This time the numbers are not from a lab: they are from our own production logs. All 27 replies in the past week were valid JSON, none came back empty on a healthy input, the median call took 4 to 7 seconds, and we have never once been rate-limited — which is precisely our problem.

“Today's price” is written everywhere; a date is written almost nowhere. Across 2,590 real prices read off sellers' own pages, only 40 carried a last-updated date, and only 25 shops out of 607 publish one at all. Worse: of those 40, seventeen were over a month old and the oldest was 264 days.

We publish a price page for every product our users search. We counted three months of them: the dearest seller of a product is typically 3× the cheapest, and buying the cheapest trustworthy offer lands about 41% below the middle of the market. The surprise is that stationery and building materials spread wider than phones do — and the reason is the unit, not the market.

Everyone has one favourite site they check first. Across 439 real products we counted where the cheapest price finally came from: Digikala 41%, Torob 28%, Emalls 22%, and the rest from shops none of those three listed. In other words, 59% of the time the cheapest price was somewhere you would not have looked first.

Hetzner serves two open Qwen models free while its inference API is experimental. We put them against our own paid chain on the same prompt and the same 112 real Persian searches. The MoE scored 57 and beat two paid models at zero cost — and reasoning turned out to matter in exactly opposite directions for the two models.

We ran a 27-billion-parameter model on a MacBook and put it against four cloud models, on the same prompt and the same real Persian searches. With reasoning on, the local model matches the best cloud model — but each call takes 165 seconds.
